Benzene And Cancer

It has been known for decades that the chemical benzene is a chemical carcinogen. Ever since the U.S. Senate started investigating and regulating carcinogens in 1980, benzene has been on the list. There are clear links between benzene and leukemia, and it is well-documented that benzene destroys the bone marrow.

The type of cancer most strongly linked to benzene exposure is Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), although most other forms of leukemia have been at least correlated to benzene. Acute Lymphatic Leukemia (ALL), Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia (CLL), Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, MDS, Aplastic Anemia, Multiple Myeloma, and Hairy Cell Leukemia have all been connected to benzene exposure.

Unfortunately, benzene's usefulness makes it hard to outlaw. Since it is a vital component in the production of rubbers, dyes, detergents, lubricants, pesticides and plastics, it would be staggeringly expensive to find a useful and non-toxic alternative. Instead, federal laws strictly control the use and containment of benzene.

Even with these safeguards in place, it is estimated that over 250,000 Americans have been exposed to benzene. Many times, this exposure is a result of employer negligence--which is unlawful on several fronts. If you believe that you or a loved one have been exposed to benzene and are suffering from one of these cancers, there may be help for you.
